In 1909 the Foo Troupe is Performing in Shanghai

In the midst of all these new U.S. tour-related machinations, the Foo troupe appeared at the Shanghai Lyceum Theatre in January of 1909. Reportedly, a large audience enjoyed Foo and Chee Toy. Foo was not on stage long, but reportedly, his tricks still “mystified.” “Little” Chee Toy, now a young teenager around 15 years of age, sang “Because I Love You” and “Just One Girl” and was “loudly applauded for her quaint rendering in a good contralto voice of the well-known songs.” Of special interest was a requested encore wherein she treated the audience to “a Chinese ballad to her own accompaniment on the piano.” A new member of the troupe, San Tow “the Chinese Hercules”, who showed himself the equal of any European strongmen, was also on the bill, as well as a juggler.432
